From ancient Roman period architecture has evolved and materials we use in construction practice are becoming more environmental friendly. In masonry construction building blocks are joined together to construct a single unit. Stone masonry being widely common from ancient periods due to natural availability of stones. At present various options are available for masonry construction like Red bricks, Fly ash bricks, AAC blocks etc. Here we will discuss common types of masonry construction which are in practice at present.
1. Brick Masonry
Brick masonry is a common type of masonry used in building houses and commercial buildings in regions of India. Burnt clay bricks are available in standard sizes are used in masonry construction to give an even finish. In present Fly ash bricks are getting popular due to environmental concerns and fly ash utilization policy of government. Brick masonry is popular due to its good performance and better cost to strength ratio.
2. Stone Masonry
Natural occurring stones are widely used for construction purpose due to their strength. Naturally stones are obtained from rocks and then cut and dressed into proper shape to use them in construction purpose. Stones have good strength and fire resistance than bricks. Also use of stones in foundation work provide durability to the structure. Stones are preferred choice for construction in hilly regions due to easier availability. In ancient periods buildings and monuments are build using stones binding them with lime mortar to provide them longevity and durability.
3. Concrete block Masonry
Modern designers has shifted their focus towards new construction practices which involves easier and faster construction. Concrete blocks are in practice as they allow faster construction with strength and durability. AAC blocks, Hollow Concrete blocks are modern material which allow insulation from surroundings. Also, It is also easier to join them into single unit for construction of walls.
